Top 5 Reasons Why Your Emails Bounce and How to Reduce Your Bounce Rate

Top Reasons Why Your Emails Bounce and How to Reduce Them

When an email message is not delivered to the recipient and returned to the sender, we call it bounce. The bounce can be temporary (a "soft bounce") and permanent ("hard bounce").

Bounce messages are a part of email marketing. Sometimes they happen because of problems that are beyond your control, and sometimes they come because something is wrong with your message or your email process setup.

In order to send more successful email campaigns, you need to understand why your emails bounce and what you can do to minimize your bounce rate.

Track Opens, Clicks and Unsubscribes

Our WPNewsman plugin is supplied with an incredible email tracking capability so that you can estimate how your email performed after sending. You do not need to insert any tracking code into your email messages. The plugin uses the built-in tracking system that provides you with email tracking statistics for each sent message.

The Lite version of WPNewsman provides you with basic email tracking only — unique email opens, unique link clicks and unsubscribed recipients. It automatically calculates the open rate, click rate and unsubscribed rate. You can see these stats in the Mailbox.

How to Create a Perfect Landing Page to Collect Subscribers

A landing page in online marketing helps tell your story and create a relationship with potential customers. It's where people who have clicked on your banner advertisement, email pitch or Facebook post will "land" to learn more about your business.

Landing pages are a huge part of any inbound marketing strategy, but one with a broken link, an insipid design or a poorly conceived offer will fail. A landing page that works correctly with a well-executed design and an offer that connects with the reader will draw repeated business.

Use WPNewsman API

Use WPNewsman API

All requests must be addressed to the script api.php

The script has two required parameters: method and key.

By default all methods respond with appropriate HTTP codes on errors. Sometimes an environment doesn’t allow to properly handle error responses, so you can add a “bepositive=1” parameter to your request and the plugin will always respond with the “200 Ok” HTTP code. In this case only the “state: false” property of the response JSON object will indicate an error.

Available methods:

  • addEmail adds the subscriber and sets the “Confirmed” status for him. The additional required parameter is email. Other parameters will be added to the JSON object in the database.
  • getLists returns the subscribers’ lists
  • downloadList returns the CSV file with subscribers. The additional required parameter is listId. The additional parameter links can contain the list of links that must be generated for each subscriber. Possible types of links are confirmation-link, resend-confirmation-link and unsubscribe-link. Other two parameters of this method are offset and limit. offset allows skip xx subscribers and return the subscribers starting from the xx number. limit allows limit the number of subscribers to return.

See the requests and responses below.

Use External Tracking Tools

Use External Tracking Tools: Google Analytics or Piwik

The Pro version of our WPNewsman plugin provides you with the ability to track your recipients’ actions using Google Analytics and Piwik tracking tools.

Google Analytics is a service that generates detailed statistics about the visits to a website. With Google Analytics’ analysis features you can find out how many customers you’re attracting, how much you’re selling and how users are engaging with your site. Read more about Google Analytics here.

Piwik is yet another tracking service. Piwik Analytics lets you track how efficient various marketing campaigns are in bringing visitors to your website (visits, page views, etc.), how well these visitors convert and how much revenue they generate. Read more about Piwik Analytics here.

Using Google Analytics or Piwik remote tracking in your newsletters is simple.

Just before sending the newsletter:

1. Choose the tracking option: Google Analytics or Piwik.

2. Enter the campaign name.

3. Click “Send”.

Lightbox Image
Click on the image to enlarge it

The plugin automatically adds the Google Analytics or Piwik tracking code to your URLs in the message.

Wait for a couple of days after you sent your newsletter and see the statistics!

Login to your Google Analytics account and click on Campaigns at the left side under Traffic Sources.

The page will show you all your campaigns. Look for ‘wpnewsman / email’ campaigns statistics.

In Piwik go to the report Referrers -> Campaigns and click on the campaign name to see how the links performed.

Tracking in Piwik is done using the ‘pk_campaign’ parameter in URLs. WPNewsman will add this parameter to each URL.

http://domain.com/products.html -> http://domain.com/products.html?pk_campaign=News-Jan2013

All visitors who open the email and click on the link will arrive on your website. Piwik will track the visit, and detect the parameter “pk_campaign” in the URL of the first page view, and the visit will be credited to the Referrer -> Campaign: “News-Jan2013”.

Use Short Codes in Emails

Use Short Codes in Emails

In WPNewsman you can use numerous short codes to merge different information into your email newsletters. When you add custom fields and/or options to the subscription form, WPNewsman instantly displays the short code for the selected field. You can copy the shortcode and insert it into the email message or template to personalize your newsletters or confirmation/welcome message.

copy shortcode in the optin form

In addition to custom short codes, you can use the short codes below:

[newsman sub="*"] outputs all fields of the subscriber. Should only be used in admin notification emails.

[newsman sub="*" tag="li"] the same as above but additionally wraps each field-value pair in the specified html element

[newsman sub="first-name"] outputs the subscriber field

[newsman wp="blogname"] outputs the results of the wp function call get_option(‘blogname’)

[newsman wp="url"] outputs the results of the wp function call get_bloginfo(‘url’)

[newsman wp="wpurl"] outputs the results of the wp function call get_bloginfo(‘wpurl’)

[newsman wp="blogdescription"] outputs the results of the wp function call get_option(‘blogdescription’)

[newsman me="email"] outputs “From email” plugin settings value

[newsman me="name"] outputs “From name” plugin settings value

[newsman link="confirmation"] outputs the subscription confirmation URL

[newsman link="resend-confirmation"] outputs the resend confirmation URL

[newsman link="unsubscribe"] outputs an instant unsubscribe URL

[newsman link="confirm-unsubscribe"] outputs the unsubscription confirmation URL

[newsman-form id="1"] outputs subscription form. id is the id of the list.

[newsman date="Y-m-d"] outputs the current date in the specified format (see http://php.net/manual/en/function.date.php for formatting options)

[newsman sub='subscribed'] outputs the subscription date

[newsman subject] outputs the email subject

[newsman fn=] works with any WordPress function. For example, the shortcode to output the post author’s name will be [newsman fn=’the_author’]

Pair (opening and closing) short codes:

[newsman_in_email]

[/newsman_in_email] text inside these short codes is visible in the email client only

[newsman_not_on_web]

[/newsman_not_on_web] text inside these short codes is visible in the email client only

[newsman_on_web]

[/newsman_on_web] text inside these short codes is visible on the web only

[newsman_has_thumbnail]

[/newsman_has_thumbnail] used in the post template only, the block is visible only if the post has a thumbnail

[newsman_no_thumbnail]

[/newsman_no_thumbnail] used in the post template only, the block is visible only if the post has no thumbnail

We suggest to use pair short codes in comments <!– –> in order they are not displayed in the message:

<!-- [newsman_in_email] -->

<!-- [/newsman_in_email] -->

Short codes that can be used inside the “post_block” editable block of digest particles file:

[newsman post="number" outputs the number of post in the batch

[newsman post="permalink"]

[newsman post="fancy_excerpt"]

[newsman post="post_date"]

[newsman post="post_title"]

[newsman post="post_content"] outputs the full post content

[newsman post="post_excerpt"] outputs the original post excerpt filled in the WordPress post’s excerpt field on the post editing page.

[newsman post="fancy_excerpt" words="150"] outputs the post excerpt created from the post content. Words – maximum number of words.

[newsman post="thumbnail"] outputs the thumbnail URL

[newsman_loop query="tag=bread,baking"] fetches the posts with standard wp query in string notation (see more here http://codex.wordpress.org/Class_Reference/WP_Query).

Also you can pass parameters to the WP_Query constructor as object, just put the shortcode as parameters, for example:

[newsman_loop tag="bread" posts_per_page="5" nopaging="1" orderby="date" order="DESC"] returns 5 latest posts with the tag “bread”

[newsman_loop post__in="1,2,3"] fetches all posts from the set

[newsman_loop post__not_in="1,2,3"] fetches all posts except those listed in the set

Short Codes for Social Profiles Links

These short codes work if you enter the URLs of your social profiles in the plugin Settings:

[newsman profileurl="twitter"] fetches the URL of your Twitter profile

[newsman profileurl="googleplus"] fetches the URL of your Google+ profile

[newsman profileurl="linkedin"] fetches the URL of your LinkedIn profile

[newsman profileurl="facebook"] fetches the URL of your Facebook profile

General Rules for Template Designers and Developers

There are two types of editable blocks at the moment: images and html content blocks. The type of block is detected automatically based on the underlying element type. <img /> tags will create an editable image block and other element will create an editable html block. It’s recommended to use <div> elements as underlying for editable html blocks as the editor uses div as the default block element during the switching between block types.

The editable block has one required attribute – "gsedit" with the unique inside the document value – the name of the block.

Example:

<div gsedit="std_preheader_content">
...
</div>

The image block has an additional parameter “placehold” which defines the size of the placeholder image and is set in format of WxH where W is the width and H is the height of the placeholder image in pixels.

Example:

<img placehold="150x80">

You can give the user an opportunity to choose which type of block he wants to use in the place. For that you need to add a “gsblock” attribute with the “image,html” value.

Example:

<div gsedit="some_switchable_block" gsblock="image,html">
...
</div>

If you want to add buttons to the block, assign to the block the gsedit attribute with any value unique for the entire message, for example:

<div gsedit="some_deletable_block"> ... </div>

The template has the particles file. The particles file contains the parts used during the post insertion. The particles file has the same name as the main template file but with the “_” character at the beginning. For example, if the main template file is main.html, the particles file will be _main.html.

The content of the particles file is:

<div gsedit="post_block">
 <div gsedit="post_item">
 </div>
</div>
<div gsedit="post_divider"><img width="551" height="6" src="images/article-spacer-3.jpg" alt=""></div>

The external tags <div gsedit=”post_block”> and <div gsedit=”post_divider”> must be used as is. Inside post_block there is <div gsedit=”post_item”> that must be used too because during the post insertion the plugin searches for the block with this name and adds a number to the name.

When you insert posts excerpts into the template, the plugin searches for the block with id=”posts_container” and inserts posts excerpts into this block. If such a block is not found, the plugin inserts posts excerpts at the place where the cursor is put.

There is a new short code [newsman_has_thumbnail] which works only when the post contains a picture.

  <!-- [newsman_has_thumbnail] ->
  <img width="325" alt="[newsman post='post_title']" src="[newsman post='thumbnail' placeholder='images/325x146.gif']" style="float:left; border: 10px solid #ffffff; margin-right: 10px;">
  <!- [/newsman_has_thumbnail] -->

Customize Action Pages

Customize Action Pages

WPNewsman adds custom posts to your site that are used to show messages addressed to the user after he takes an action. In our plugin these posts are called action pages. After the user subscribes, they see the "Confirmation Required" action page. After the user confirms the subscription, they see the "Thank you" page.

WPNewsman provides you with seven pre-configured action pages used in the double opt-in subscription process.

  • Please confirm your unsubscribe decision – asks the user to click on the link in the confirmation email to confirm their decision to unsubscribe (if you choose to use the double opt-out procedure in the Settings).
  • Bad email address format – asks the user to enter a valid email address.
  • Confirmation required – asks the user to confirm the subscription.
  • Confirmation successful – thanks the user for confirming his subscription.
  • Subscription not yet confirmed – tells the user that his email address is already subscribed but not confirmed.
  • Successfully unsubscribed – tells the user that he was successfully unsubscribed from the mailing list.
  • Already subscribed and verified – tells the user that the email address is already subscribed and confirmed.

All action pages are stored in your Admin panel and can be customized there.

Click on “Action Pages” under WPNewsman.

Click on “Edit” under the action page name.
